Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

One of the most important roles of participants in the learning community is to be open to growing and to help others grow by by naming any biases, oversights, or assumptions they observe. Students are encouraged to discuss any incidents of perceived bias or discrimination, conscious or otherwise, with the course instructor, the division chair, or with the office of the Chief Diversity Officer at SCC. Sinclair Community College  (SCC) is committed to providing equitable educational opportunities and a safe learning environment for all students, faculty, and staff. View the SCC Non-Discriminatory Practices Policy . A bias incident is any type of conduct, speech, or expression that demonstrates conscious or unconscious bias and targets individuals or groups that are part of a federally protected class (i.e., race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, or disability).

NSG1600 COURSE POLICIES

Exams and Quizzes

Unit exams will be administered in the Testing Center by appointment only. Lab Quizzes and Medication Administration Assessments will be administered at the beginning of lab time on designated lab days. Unit quizzes will be taken on your home computer.

If a student fails to take the exam in the scheduled time frame they must contact the instructor immediately. An alternate exam of equal rigor will be made available to them. There will be a deduction of 10% of the value of the exam subtracted from the earned grade on the exam at the discretion of the course group faculty. Example: All unit exams are 50 points. The student would lose five (5) points from the earned points on this exam. If the student earned 45 points on the exam then 5 points would be deducted giving the student 40 points as the recorded points earned.

Process for illness that delays taking exams:

1. Notify your instructor as soon as you realize you will not be able to take the exam in the scheduled time frame.

2. You will need to provide proof of illness. These could include, but is not limited, to a Provider's note, Discharge paperwork from Urgent Care, Hospital or Emergency Room.

3. You will be provided with an alternate exam of equal rigor to be scheduled when your are well enough to take the exam.

4. If this extends past the end of the course the student will receive an "I" incomplete for their grade. It must me completed with in 30 days of the next semester. The grade will then be converted to the final grade. Failure to complete this in the 30 day time frame will result in an "F" for the course.

Exam Review Policy:

Reviewing Tests with Students

1. To promote test security, students will not be allowed to review their tests once submitted. Students will have 24 hours after they take their test to contact faculty by email regarding test question concerns.

2. All students earning less than 80% on an exam are encouraged to make an appointment with their faculty. Faculty can discuss test questions in terms of concepts, not specifics. The faculty can also discuss test-taking strategies and study skills. The faculty will complete a coaching form and provide a copy to the student if not at 80% after the 3rd exam.

Attendance Policy:

Class Guidelines

Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. In the event of an absence, it is the student's responsibility to contact their peers to obtain the missed material and assignments. Faculty will address tardiness and/or absences at their discretion. If meeting virtually, students will have video cameras turned on and be visibly present. Students may contact their instructors before class to discuss exceptions and/or modifications to the requirement. Professional appearance and behaviors are expected at all classes labs and clinical experiences.

Laboratory Experiences

·       Nursing laboratory activities enhance skill performance and critical thinking, prioritizing, and decision-making. Faculty will address students absences and punctuality lapses at their discretion. In the event of a lab absence, required supervised practice, simulation experiences, and /or performance exam testing may be required outside of normally scheduled lab hours.

Clinical Experiences

Students will be required to follow institution policies, which may require masking at the clinical site

There may be additional requirements by the clinical site for clinical participation.

Clinical experiences provide opportunities to apply the art and science of nursing with clients and families. Clinical performance and clinical assignments are pass/ fail. While these items do not add to the points that determine your course grade, you are required to receive a passing grade on these assignments and to meet the clinical objectives to be successful in this course.

Clinical orientation day is mandatory. Students who miss the clinical orientation may have to withdraw from the course.

Students whose absences exceed ten percent (10%) of the planned clinical hours may receive a failing clinical grade if clinical outcomes are not met. Faculty will address student absences and punctuality lapses at their discretion.

In the case of absence, it is the students responsibility to notify the clinical instructor of the absence. Clinical absences must be made up. The clinical instructor may use time before or after a scheduled clinical day or on an alternate day to make up missed clinical time. At the instructors discretion, a written assignment may be given for missed clinical time. Make-up assignments/clinical experiences do not erase clinical absences.

Students must follow clinical facility-specific COVID-19 screening requirements.

In the event a clinical site is inaccessible for normally scheduled hours, the clinical instructor may use time before or after scheduled clinical days or on alternate days to replace missed clinical time.

Community clinical time may be scheduled outside of scheduled course hours. Students are expected to attend all community clinical hours if available.

            Punctuality

Punctuality is expected for class, lab, and clinical. It is the students responsibility to notify their professor or clinical instructor if they are going to be late or absent. Students who are more than 30 minutes late may be counted as absent for clinical and asked not to come to clinical. Patterns of tardiness will be addressed at the discretion of the faculty. Two clinical days of being tardy will count as one full clinical absence and may be subject to clinical make-up.

Grade Policies:

Grading Scale

There are four components to passing courses with clinical experiences. The components are:

1. Achieve a cumulative 80% or higher on proctored assessments (exams, medication administration assessment, and lab quizzes).

2. Achieve a cumulative 80% or higher on non-proctored assignments(this may include but it is not limited to remote learning activities, assignments, homework, professional points, non-proctored quizzes).

3. Pass the clinical evaluation. Student must meet all clinical objectives in the clinical area to pass the course.

4. Pass the lab evaluations.

A student will receive an D in this course when they do not pass all components unless they earned an F in the cumulate proctored or non-proctored components of the course.

Grade Rounding Policy

If the cumulated grade component is .50 or greater, it is rounded to the next highest whole number (example:  79.5 is rounded to 80%).

If the grade is .49 or less, it is rounded to the next lowest whole number (example: 92.49 is rounded to 92%).

Additional Grading information

Each unit will have an EAQ attached to the content. EAQs are graded as unproctored points. You will be awarded 1 point for opening the EAQ. If you level up in the entire content area you will earn 5 points.

·        All written assignments must be turned in electronically, unless otherwise directed by the faculty. The file name of ALL electronic submissions must start with your tartan #, last name first initial, assignment name in it, and the course/section and the semester. EX: 123456_petersenk_esyllabus_nsg1600.104_Sp21.doc. Failure to save any assignment as indicated, will not be accepted and may result in an assignment being late.

Late assignments will not be graded.

4) Clinical Skills Check offs will be scheduled throughout the semester. These Skills Check Offs will be performed during scheduled lab time. Students are required to have 3 documented practice sessions for each skill by the Friday PRIOR to the  scheduled skills check-off. The student will use the Wufoo checklists in the course shell.  They can perform and record multiple 'Practice Attempts" in a single session, however. These practices must be performed on campus for the Wufoo app to capture and record them in the system. Failure to have these three (3) documented practice sessions at the time of the skills check off will result in the student forfeiting their first attempt at this skill check off. The student will have 3 attempts to pass the Clinical Skills Check off. Second attempts for skills not passed on the first attempt will be held week 11 during lab time for your section. A third attempt to pass a skill check off will be scheduled week 16 with your instructor only AFTER the student has passed all other requirements to pass the course. Failure to pass by the third attempt will result in a clinical failure for the course. The maximum grade that can be achieved will be a "D".
